Our next stop after Tulum was the small colonial town of Valladolid. It was a beautiful, relaxed place to hang for a few days. From here we visited the ruins of Chichen Itza and Ek Balam. We thought that Chichen Itza was quite over-rated and far too expensive for what it is, but really enjoyed visiting the smaller ruins of Ek Balam as their were barely any people there, and we could actually walk up onto the ruins. We stayed with such a nice family here, that our stay really was enjoyable.
After Valladolid we moved onto Merida, another colonial city and the capital of Yucatan. We again couchsurfed and even went to visit a ranch owned by Jose, our host, in a small town, Tekax. We visited some more ruins here and were the only ones there.
When we first arrived in Valladolid, we went to swim in a cenote outside of town. These cenotes are simkholes that are filled with water, many of them underground in caves. There are hundreds all over the Yucatan peninsular.
Enjoying some traditional dance in the main square of Valladolid.

Cassie is stoked as she actually feels tall here. This lady is barely taller than a pushbike! |
